Bio

Painting nature and local landscapes allows me to connect to and explore our relationship with life and wonder at its fragile beauty and diversity. Sometimes the muse in me is attracted to the strange and unusual. The man made occurring in nature, that was once out of place, but now as it ages becomes part of the environment and over time absorbed back into the earth. Things that you overlook every day and never really see or are a little obscure or taboo interest me. I think that they capture a moment time and  tell a story of us. Of the world around us, our place in it and the endless cycle of Life.

I use similar techniques when painting in egg tempera (ET) or acrylic although they are very different mediums.  First laying down an abstract underlayer and working back into it by adding and subtracting paint. I like to use muted earthy colours with ET whilst in acrylic, I paint mainly in black and white. I use both to create mood, atmosphere and drama using contrasting values. I sometimes use accent colours to highlight something in the painting that I want to draw attention to. Layers are built using abstract marks, paint spatters drips and scratches which I then work back into to leaving glimpses of it showing through.
